Purple Crocus

A sure sign of spring, crocuses (or croci) are an early blooming perennial native to Europe, North Africa and Asia. They were first cultivated and harvested in the Mediterranean. Alas, as it is February in Ontario, this one I purchased from the grocery store in a little pot.

The Grape Hyacinth on my windowsill loves the morning light. Also known as Muscari, they are a member of the lily family, native to Eurasia.

Clementine Dark Purple Columbine starts to flower in early May. Also called Aquilegia vulgaris, this is a new columbine variety with double purple flowers resembling Clematis.
