Purple Spikes

Purple Spikes

Not sure what kind of flowers these are, any ideas? Late summer bloomers and likely perennials, they make a lovely mass planting. Close up they resemble a hillside of trees. Update – thanks to Meanderer for identifying these lovely flowers – they are Astilbe chinensis or Chinese astilbe.
