Here in New England, a few generations ago, they always planted hollyhocks beside the outhouse so the location of that convenience would be obvious, say, to a lady visitor and she wouldn’t have the indelicate task of having to ask to use the facilities. My grandmother told me this…so I always associate hollyhocks with that little old “cathedral in the pines.”
