These are edible. Even the pollen can be used to make cakes. I’ve never eaten them, but, as kids, we used to love to light these and carry them around burning! 🙂
It seems that your bulrushes are our cattails. Now I’m wondering what plant was meant in the story about Moses being found in the bulrushes. I’d always assumed bulrushes were some exotic plant. More research is required!

My mother grew up in Iowa, and she’s told me stories of doing the same thing — lighting them and using them as torches.
