Hi Linda, It is Euonymus atropurpureus and Wikipedia says it is a member of the bittersweet family. It also says that it is native primarily to the Midwestern United States but its range extends from southern Ontario (where I live) to northern Florida and Texas!! So hey you never know there could be some around your state.
Is that bittersweet? It’s one of my favorite plants, but doesn’t grow down here.
I answered my own question: the answer’s ‘no.’ But they certainly resemble one another!
