Japanese Invader

Japanese Invader

Japanese Barberry is an invasive plant in Ontario.

Japanese Barberry, berberis thunbergii, looks like American Barberry, however the native species does not grow as far north as Ontario. This barberry variety poses a threat to natural areas because it spreads quickly, is drought and shade tolerant, and is a popular landscape shrub. Pretty to photograph but harmful to our natural areas.
