Red As Sumac

Staghorn Sumac and blue sky

The velvety antler-like branches of the Staghorn Sumac, Rhus typhina, stand out against the bright blue winter sky. Native to Eastern North America, this hardy, deciduous shrub has been used by Native Americans as part of a smoking and a drink mixture. It is also used as a natural dye and mordant.
