The ostrich fern's fertile fronds from last season provide winter interest in the garden. For some reason my cat loves to chew on these, that is when he dares to go out in the snow.

Detail of an Ostrich Fern frond. Easy to grow and beautiful to look at, I'm lucky to have a lot of these in my garden giving it a woodland feel. Ferns are ancient plants with the oldest fossils of them found said to be 360 million years old!

End of Season

In the fall, Ostrich Ferns – Matteuccia struthiopteris – remain as brown stalks that look somewhat like rusted metal close up. I generally leave them for winter interest in the garden.
