The ostrich fern's fertile fronds from last season provide winter interest in the garden. For some reason my cat loves to chew on these, that is when he dares to go out in the snow.

In the fall, Ostrich Ferns – Matteuccia struthiopteris – remain as brown stalks that look somewhat like rusted metal close up. I generally leave them for winter interest in the garden.
